Highlights At Home | L'Oreal Kit

I went home last weekend to visit my family and my best friend (and my cat). I had decided that it was definitely time to get a hair cut. My hair had grown quite a bit but was in such bad condition that it had seemed to...stop growing. I booked an appointment with a hairdresser who had been recommended to me back home and decided to just go for it and get quite a lot off of the length. I'm so pleased with how it turned out and will definitely go back there next time.

Seeing as I'd had quite a bit off the length the lighter bits of my hair weren't as prominent any more. This is when I decided that I was going to try and do something about this...at home! Why go and pay £70 plus when you can spend a fiver on a kit and do it in the comfort of your own home right? (That's what I told myself, hoping that I was right).

When I was about thirteen my mum helped me put highlights in my hair at home and it went horribly wrong. We used a kit that came with a little odd shaped applicator and I ended up looking like a leopard. So this time I decided to go with a kit that comes with a brush. I'll be honest, I was terrified. Especially as I was letting my mum do it. Neither of us have had ANY hairdressing experience. I watched a few tutorials online to get ideas about the best way to get more natural looking highlights and we eventually decided to just go for it. As soon as my mum started applying the product, mostly concentrating on the underneath and not taking it all the way to the roots (that's where we had the problem before) I began to trust her. The kit came with a cap but we decided to just apply the product randomly with the brush, taking different sized pieces of hair. She started by applying it half way up the bit of hair, putting more on the ends and then brushing the rest towards the roots.

We decided not to leave it on for too long so I washed it off after 20 minutes as I was trying to go for a more 'natural' effect. I'm actually really pleased with the result! No patches and most importantly no copper tones. I'm really tempted to apply a few more highlights in a few weeks time being a bit more brave, making them go all the way from the roots. If I do then I'll definitely use this L'Oreal kit again. It was incredibly easy to use and so affordable.

Have you highlighted your hair at home? What was your experience like?

  1. First of all, what a lovely haircut :). And to be honest, I never thought of doing my hair colour alone. But yours looks amazing, so maybe I'll give it a thought in the future!
    Really nice results :).

    1. I really struggled to find any reviews so I'm glad it's helped :) I found lots of reviews for the touch on one which looks great but they only sell it in the States! Let me know if you try it out at home.

  3. I've actually never dyed my hair, though I have tried to cut it myself (and failed) - but you really succeeded, I love the way it looks super natural! :-)
On another note; I've tagged you in a really cool photo challenge in my most recent blog post, so if you'd like to share some of your photos I'd love to see them! ;-)

  5. Wow, that turned out great and I love your new hair cut as well! I had a super terrible experience home-highlighting when I was in high school... it was one of the kits with the cap so I would never try highlighting again haha!

  6. Hannah really love your hair cut and colour! I have been thinking to do the same for a while now and as you I don't want to spend so much money for it but at the same time I feel quiet scared of doing it on my own :D I will probably give it a go and perhaps leave for 20 minutes as you did to have a more natural effect!
    Thanks for sharing.

  7. Looks great! I tried to dye my mom's hair a little while back, and it had the opposite effect-- it was hard to tell if the dye colored her hair at all! Glad that you had a positive experience.

  8. Love that natural look! Your hair looks amazing and your mam did a brilliant job :)
I use L'Oreal colour on my hair too, but use semi-permanent tints all over my hair!

  9. I've died my hair darker a few times at home, but never gone lighter! I've been thinking about putting a few highlights in the bottom of my hair for a really subtle ombre-type look. Might give this kit a go, but so scared it'll turn out orange! xx
